Living and Studying in Los Angeles
There are so many things to see and do in Los Angeles that it can be somewhat overwhelming, especially if you are a student who is trying to get some work done in the meantime. From clubs, to restaurants, movies, celebrities and more, there are plenty of distractions which can make it hard to get that paper written or that project finished. Fortunately, there are some great places to get away from all of it, and still enjoy yourself at the same time. The two destinations listed below are particularly great for those living and studying in Los Angeles, and you’ll most likely find them to be quite enjoyable.
The Getty Museum
The Getty Museum is one of the premier museums in the world, and also one of the most beautiful architecturally. Composed predominantly of imported Italian marble, the building itself is almost a work of art. Explore formal gardens with paths that meander through rows of plants and under flower adorned arches. Sit out on the soft, short-cropped lawn and get a great view of the city stretched out endlessly below. Or enjoy many of the countless works of art that are on display throughout the museum. There are also select places that you can go where wireless is available and free, and admission to the museum is free as well, making this the ideal study destination for a student on a budget. You can even take the Metro Rapid Line 761 to get there if you don’t have a car.
The best part about The Getty as a place for studying or getting school work done is that there are few distractions. During the weekday it’s not particularly busy, and even when there are people, they are usually fairly quiet as a result of the museum atmosphere. It’s a comforting place to sit and relax without worrying when you need to leave, or if you have to buy something to stay. And, the beautiful art that surrounds you helps to focus the mind for what needs to be accomplished.
Huntington Gardens
Huntington Gardens is located just outside of Los Angeles in Pasadena. This beautiful stretch of land is home to thousands of different species of plants and animals from all over the world. With huge open spaces that fall away into bamboo forests or desert terrain, to Japanese Zen Gardens and bridges over pools filled with Koi, there is so much to see and experience at Huntington Gardens. The sounds of the birds and the wind through leaves make the perfect background for any studying that has to be done. And since Los Angeles almost always has sunny weather, you can go to Huntington Gardens all year long.
Huntington Gardens is closed on Tuesdays, and is open from Noon until 4:30 on weekdays. The gardens are open from 10:30 AM until 4:30 PM on the weekends, so you can stay and enjoy the grounds a little longer. Adult tickets are $15 on the weekdays and $20 on the weekends, so it’s not quite as cheap as The Getty, but you’ll definitely find that this is an ideal spot for students, either alone or in study groups, as there is certainly plenty of room for everyone to spread out. If you bring your Student ID, you can get in for $10, which helps to cut down the cost significantly, especially if you find yourself wanting to go back time and again. Also, the first Thursday of every month is free admission, but you have to reserve your tickets in advance.
Enjoy Your Time as a Student in LA
Los Angeles is a great city full of life and culture. While this can sometimes be a hindrance to getting your work done, The Getty Museum and Huntington Gardens are two great places to go to get away from it all and focus on the work you need to get done. They’re much better than a coffee shop, and they both provide the relaxing quiet time that best facilitates getting work done that you need to.
