Top 5 Things To Do in Ferry Plaza

April 5, 2010 Le Cordon Bleu San Francisco 0 Comments

San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza is known for being one of the top farmers markets on the west coast. Located in the beautiful, spacious Ferry Building next to Pier 39, San Francisco’s farmers market gathers merchants of all varieties. Since there’s so much to see and do in this area, we’ve put together a top 5 list of the best attractions and activities the market has to offer.

  1. Find some fresh fish: If you’re travelling to San Francisco and looking for some fresh seafood, Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is definitely the place to find it. Crab legs, salmon filets and shrimp are all in abundance here. By buying seafood in the farmers market, you’re supporting the local fishing community and the livelihoods of the merchants who depend on market dwellers like you.
  2. Make time for a margarita: Thursday’s market features a wide selection of artisan foods, including some of the best Mexican food in town. Meander to the rear plaza of the Ferry Building sit along the dock overlooking the bay as you enjoy wood-fired pizza, sandwiches, grilled meats and more.
  3. Collect some trinkets: The farmers market at Ferry Plaza is a great place to find unique, handcrafted trinkets, art pieces and novelty items. Unlike other farmers markets, most of the collectibles and knickknacks offered here are made with quality craftsmanship – as oppose to common, less heartfelt products like kettle corn or flattened coins. The merchants who sell in Ferry Plaza are experienced craft makers who take pride in their products, so don’t expect to find the same old trunk of junk at this world-renowned market.
  4. Buy farm fresh foods: There’s no better way to experience a farmer’s market than to feast on the foods from local farms. The bay area is recognized for producing some of the most fantastic wine in the country so treat yourself to a bottle of vino with grapes cultivated by local Californians. Don’t forget to try some of the fresh produce offered in the Ferry Building. Buy some ripe tomatoes, pungent basil and a bunch of wet, spring greens – mix the items together and you have yourself your own culinary creation.
  5. Get there early: Fortunately, this farmer’s market is a thrice-weekly festivity, so avoid the weekend crowds and get there on an early weekday morning. You really get a feel for the hard work and dedication the merchants put into their crafts when you experiencing them at the beginning of the day, when they’re setting up shop and preparing for the hoards of customers.
