5 Hearty Spring Breakfast Ideas
Everyone likes a good breakfast and according to our parents, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is easy during the winter to eat a good breakfast because it is cold outside. What else is there to do when it’s cold? Ok, there are other things to do…but you get the point!
Now that spring is here, however, breakfast can take on new importance as fresh fruits and vegetables abound. Why have a plain bowl of cereal when you can just as easily add fresh strawberries or bananas? Why eat plain old eggs when you can spruce them up with fresh green onions and bell peppers? Why have simply a bowl of porridge when blueberries are in season? If you are finding that your cooking techniques are not quite up to par, cooking schools often teach classes for enthusiasts who simply want to take their own cooking to new heights. You may want to check the schedule of classes at your local culinary school in California.
Springtime brings abundance of all our favorite fresh fruits and vegetables; why not take advantage of this abundance (and seasonally reduced cost) to add an element of delight to every breakfast. After all, it is the most important meal of the day.
Try these 5 hearty spring breakfast ideas
- Western Omelet – These have been around for years, but nothing satisfies like a big, fluffy omelet filled with your favorite ingredients. Prepare your omelet mix by beating the eggs until fluffy. Add a little pre-mixed pancake batter to the eggs and blend further. Dice up pre-cooked steak, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, green onions, and mushrooms then add shredded cheddar cheese. Pour the egg mix into an omelet pan, then top with the diced up veggies, meat, and cheese. Fold when ready, flip, then serve when well-done. Add a sprig of fresh parsley to add that little restaurant touch. Very filling and delicious too.
- Porridge anyone? – Add diced fresh fruit to your bowl of oatmeal, cream of wheat, or grits. This may seem a no-brainer, but the combination makes for a hearty breakfast that will provide you with good mental energy all day.
- Fresh Fruit – With fruit in abundance and cost-effective for most families during the spring and summer months, why not take advantage of this time to eat better? Melons from the Rio Grande Valley along with strawberries from Louisiana and oranges from California or Florida, diced and blended makes for a delicious meal. To round it out, be sure to have some toast with fresh cream butter.
- Egg and sausage Pizza – How many parents fussed in the 70s because their kids began eating cold pizza for breakfast? Now we have the ability to blend the best of both worlds, with egg pizza. It is very simple. Prepare your pizza crust as you would normally. Instead of tomato sauce, use white, cream gravy. Beat the eggs and pour onto the gravy covered crust. Add pieces of sausage, bacon, or any other toppings that please (don’t forget those fresh veggies), then top with the cheese of your choice (mozzarella still works best). Bake and serve.
- Cold Pizza – Ok, this WAS supposed to be just about Spring breakfast ideas, but the fact is, provided you find the right pizza, nothing can be more satisfying breakfast-wise than good old cold pizza. The test of a great pizza, in fact, is how it tastes the next morning cold. If it is just as good or better cold for breakfast, that is a truly great pizza. Pizza for breakfast rocks regardless of the season.
