Nutritional Differences Between Dark, White and Milk Chocolate

It seems no matter how old we get, we never outgrow a love for chocolate. As children we look forward to Easter baskets overflowing with rich treats and as we get older we may even acquire a taste for a delicious mocha. The culinary art world has dedicated full menus and dessert sections to decadent chocolate after dinner drinks complete with tasty liqueur.

While the last thing that many of us may want to focus on when indulging in these tasty delights is nutrition, there is actually some health benefits found in the cocoa bean from which chocolate is derived. Just as not all chocolate has the same overall taste qualities, these different types also have different nutritional values. This Easter make an informed decision about what chocolate you would like to treat yourself or your children too, just don’t get too carried away – it can’t quite be placed in the “health food” category. Dark Chocolate: Believe it or not, dark chocolate is the most health advantageous of all different types of chocolate. Studies have even proven that it may help blood flow more freely to the brain. You can see how this would greatly help older adults at risk for dementia or other health problems.. The antioxidants and flavanoids that are also found in chocolate have been associated with lowering the risk of cancer and helping to regulate cholesterol. Of course, in excess chocolate due to its richness can lead to weight gain. It should be enjoyed in moderation to avoid complications.

White Chocolate: Okay, ready to be shocked? Despite the name, white chocolate doesn't really contain chocolate most of the time. As a result, many of the traditional advantages associated with chocolate don't really apply. The creamy taste and chocolaty appearance are due to the cocoa butter and milk fat, not actual chocolate.

Milk Chocolate: When compared to dark chocolate, milk chocolate has a slightly higher dairy fat and calorie content but hardly enough to be noticeable. Due to the higher milk content in the milk chocolate there is a bit more calcium and protein than dark chocolate. On the other hand dark chocolate is slightly lower in saturated fat and cholesterol.
