Figgy Pudding and Other Traditional Christmas Snacks

For each person there are those few foods that will always be associated with the holiday season. Whether it is the perfectly browned Turkey on the Christmas dinner table or the clam pie on Christmas Eve, every family and every cultural has their own traditional Christmas foods. If you are interested in enrolling in a cooking school in Georgia here are some of the most popular traditional Christmas snacks from around the globe that you might like to learn how to cook.

Figgy Pudding

Figgy pudding is a traditional spice cake made with figs and walnuts that dates back to as early as Shakespearean times in England. Also known as Christmas pudding and plum pudding this moist cake is not only delicious but thanks to its high brandy content, very long lasting. The cake is traditionally steamed and often times set aflame right before serving. Easy to make and easy to store this is a great tradition in the culinary art world.

Candy Canes

Traditionally a cane shaped peppermint candy in red and white stripes, this Christmas classic decorates many a tree every holiday. While peppermint sticks had already been a popular confection for decades the first hook shaped candy cane is credited to a choirmaster at a cathedral in Germany. According to legend it is believed that in 1670 he bent candy sticks into the modern cane shape to resemble a sheppard’s crook and gave them to the children that came to his services.

Buche de Noel

The buche de Noel, or Yule log is a traditional Christmas dessert that is still made annually in Francophone countries around the world. Traditionally made with yellow sponge cake and chocolate butter cream frosting, the cake is rolled up and then decorated to resemble a log. Details such as berry and mushrooms as well as textured frosting are added to give it as realistic an appearance as possible. The detail that goes into these cakes makes them a beautiful addition to the Christmas culinary arts.

Fruit Cake

No list of Christmas snacks would be complete without mentioning the often dreaded and misunderstood fruit cake. While it has become the butt of many a holiday joke this remains a tradition that refuses to die. While they can occasionally be tasteless and rock hard they can also be moist and delicious. Similar to figgy pudding, fruit cake is a yellow cake made with an assortment of chopped candied fruit, nuts and spices that is soaked in alcohol such as rum or brandy.

If you love to cook, enrolling in a cooking school in Georgia is a great way to pick up the techniques that you can use to create your own traditional holiday meals and snacks.
