How to Make Sugar Cookie Dough

The holidays conjure up images of snowmen, frost on windows and snowflakes drifting silently to the ground. So what does this mean when you live in the desert? Well…you just have to be a bit more creative to bring that wintertime feeling to the Valley for Christmas.

So how exactly does one manage pulling off this rather difficult sounding feat? Christmas cookies are one great way to start! Perhaps one of the greatest things about sugar cookie dough is the ability to roll it out and make it into whatever shape you would like – and this means you can pull off the seemingly impossible task of bringing snowmen, snowflakes and other wintertime staples right here to the center of Scottsdale. Try this simple recipe and maybe you will create more than just some tasty holiday treats, but perhaps you will awaken a passion for baking and a desire to discover culinary arts and baking classes in Arizona.

Step 1: First begin gathering all your ingredients while preheating the oven to 375 F. You will need 2 ¾ cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup softened butter, 1 ¾ cup white sugar, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step 2: Begin by stirring the dry ingredients together with the exception of the sugar. Once the other dry ingredients are stirred together, set them aside and begin creaming the sugar and softened butter together until smooth then add the egg and vanilla, thoroughly beating them into the mixture.

Step 3: Next, combine the dry and wet ingredients together in a large bowl. Begin blending until the traditional dough-type consistency is reached and all appears well blended.

Step 4: You can begin shaping the cookies and placing them on the sheet, however, if you plan on rolling them thin and using a cookie cutter, you may want to allow the dough to chill in the fridge until it is less sticky and easier to work with. Perhaps 3 to 4 hours. However, if you would like to take a creative twist on it and freehand the shapes, then refrigeration is not necessary.

Step 5: When ready to begin baking, place the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and allow them to bake 7 to 10 minutes or until they begin to lightly brown. If you are unsure if they are done or not, take a spatula and carefully peak underneath the bottom of one of the cookies to make sure that they are not burning. Once they are ready, remove from the oven and allow them to sit on the cookie sheets for 3 to 4 minutes before carefully removing them with the spatula and transferring them to a cookie sheet to cool.
