How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

If you are looking for a romantic dessert to whip up in your kitchen this Valentine’s Day nothing is as simple and yet as elegant as chocolate covered strawberries. A cooking class favorite and many Austin culinary schools, these sweet treats can be made in just a few easy steps.

Step 1: Assemble your Ingredients

To get started you will want to assemble the following items:

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Semi-sweet or dark chocolate- you can use chips or bars they both work well
  • Butter
  • Large platter or cookie sheet covered in wax paper
  • Microwave-safe bowl

Step 2: Wash Your Strawberries

Rinse all of your strawberries in cool water and dry them thoroughly with a paper towel. If the are not completely dry the chocolate won’t stick so don’t forget this important step. Leave the strawberries whole with the stems on this will make dipping them easier and give them a better finished appearance.

Step 3: Melt Your Chocolate

If you have purchased chocolate bars, chop the bars into little pieces with a sharp knife. If you purchased chips you can skip this step and put the chips in your microwave-safe bowl. Combine chocolate and butter, about 2tbsp for every 12 ounces of chocolate and microwave on medium power for one minute. Stir your mixture and return to microwave, continue to heat until completely melted stopping to stir every 30 seconds or so.

Step 4: Coat Your Strawberries

Taking one berry at a time, pick up the fruit by the stem and carefully dip it in the melted chocolate leaving a little red showing at the top. Set the covered berries on your wax paper to cool.

Step 5: Cool Your Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Once all of your fruit is coated and has been transferred to your baking sheet, place the sheet in the refrigerator and allow the chocolate to cool. Once the chocolate is completely hardened your berries are ready to eat.

If you enjoy baking and would like to learn more about preparing your own romantic desserts consider enrolling in a cooking class at an Austin culinary school.
