Healthy Lunches on the Go

It is very easy to forget eating healthy when away from home. A good many people are away from home during the lunch hour and it is an easy temptation to just get something “fast” to tide us over until dinner. And a lot of times, that “fast” lunch is anything but healthy. Not to mention the strain on the wallet that eating out poses over time. You can incorporate healthier culinary arts creations into your lunch on the go fairly easily. Oregon cooking schools teach their students above all else that healthy food can be great tasting and soon you will see that it is true!

Packing lunches seems to have an unpopular connotation. It seems to mean to a lot of people that you are “too broke” to go out for lunch, thereby giving the appearance of not being successful. This doesn’t have to be the case at all, but perception is everything. And let’s face it; pride is a terrible reason to go without lunch, or to eat fast food, which can get very pricey over time. And again, most fast food isn’t the healthiest choice out there.

With a little planning and forethought, you can have a healthy lunch, whether you pack it yourself, or “order in”. For the budget conscious, let’s leave the ordering in for special culinary arts occasions.

Forget the “brown bag” for just a moment. There are a lot of choices for packing lunches out there, and many styles of lunch boxes that don’t have to look like you took your kid’s lunch box to work. Once you take out the storage issue, eating healthy is a piece of cake (pardon the pun)!

Healthy lunches don’t have to be tasteless or boring. There are a lot of seasonings and spices that can perk up any style of lunch. Tired of sandwiches? Try a spinach or tomato wrap. Not only are they colorful and tasty, but they are better than sliced bread. Don’t forget fresh fruits and vegetables, either by themselves or with a low fat dip. Salads are another healthy consideration; just remember to leave off the dressing until time to eat to keep it from becoming soggy. There are a lot of low fat and fat free dressings out there, so don’t be afraid to try them out. 

Trying to quit the soda? Try instead an herbal tea, which can have a lot of antioxidants, or a sparkling water, a “light” fruit juice, or even just plain cold water. There are also a lot of different styles of sugar free flavorings that you can add to water, to spice things up a bit.

Even snacking doesn’t have to put you under. There are a lot of “100 calorie” packages of cookies, crackers, pretzels, etc. There are also rice cakes that come in different flavors, so you aren’t just stuck with a “dried cardboard” flavor.

Eating healthy is a choice you make. It doesn’t take a ton of effort, but it does require a decision on your part to “choose” to be healthy. Who knows, but that you won’t start a trend? In the long run, you will be glad that you did, and very possibly your wallet will thank you as well.
