How to make Homemade Granola

Granola is one of the most versatile, healthy foods you can find. Walk down any grocery store cereal aisle and you’ll see many different types of granola cereal, or if you’re picking up snacks for your kids you’ll find a wide variety of granola bars.  Whether you’re eating your granola for breakfast, on a hike, or a simple snack, it’s one of the easiest foods to make and you can make it with as much or as little flavor you want.  Recipes vary, here’s one of the many.

The Nuts and Berries of Granola
Nuts are the base of every granola and then usually you’ll find dried fruits for extra flavor and texture. The great thing about granola is everything is custom you can pick the nuts, berries, even the spices. 

For this recipe use:
3 cups of old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant)
3/4 cup sliced or slivered almonds
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1/2 tablespoon wheat germ (optional)
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons canola oil or 2 tablespoons  unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup  pure maple syrup
1 cup dried fruits (cranberries, cherries, apricots, dates, figs, and/or raisins)

Simple Prep for Great Granola

Before doing anything preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Next, you’ll want to mix the oats, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. In a small bowl you’ll blend your oil or butter with the maple syrup and pour this mixture over your dry mixture.  For the best results make sure that you coat your dry ingredients with a thick coat of the oil and syrup blend.

Baking Your Granola

After you’ve mixed your ingredients you’ll spread it evenly on a baking sheet, then bake for 30 to 45 minutes or until its golden brown.  Stir your granola every so often so that it browns evenly.

Cooling

After your granola is golden brown you’ll want to cool it on a wire rack.  Break up any big clumps while it’s still warm, when your granola is completely cooled you can store it in an air tight container. 

Add your Fruit

After it’s completely cooled you can pick your favorite dried fruit and add it in.  This is where your granola is completely custom -- make it yours.

In a little over an hour you have a delicious batch of granola, eat it for breakfast or a snack. Granola is a delicious treat that’s easy and rather cheap to make.
