Ten Food Gifts for Mother’s Day
That’s right. Mother’s Day is here again. You didn’t forget did you? If you did, or even if you didn’t (there’s always time to change your mind), we’ve put together this list of ten food-related gifts that’ll be sure to put a smile on mom’s face.
- Buy Her Dinner from a Personal Chef
So last year you made mom a delicious meal but want to up the ante this year. You don’t have a cooking degree so what are you going to do? Hire a personal chef to come over to mom’s house and cook her a delicious gourmet meal. Depending on where you live, you may even be able to hire a celebrity chef.
- The Original Rabbit Corkscrew
If all we could say about it was that it pulls a cork in 3 seconds, it would still be a great gift. In addition, it looks cool, has an ergonomic design, and a 10-year warranty. Shop for it online or at kitchen and home stores like Crate & Barrel and Williams-Sonoma.
- Magazine Subscriptions
Why stop at a gift for only one day of the year. With magazine subscriptions, you can give mom a gift every month. There are dozens and dozens of food, health, and nutrition magazines that would make excellent gifts. But, instead of the tried and true titles, do a little research and find a specialized title that fits with mom’s likes and interests.
- Gift Card to Specialty Food Store
Specialty food and kitchen storeshave incredible inventories of interesting and hard-to-find products. Imported sea salts, artisanal foods, and high-end kitchen gadgets are just the tip of the iceberg. They stock everything to make cooking in Massachusetts enjoyable. Stop into a local one to see if their products are similar to mom’s tastes before buying to ensure the best fit for gift giving.
- Restaurant Gift Certificate
While not particularly imaginative, restaurant gift certificates are always a big hit for gift giving any time of the year. Make it more imaginative by locating a particularly hot or hip local restaurant that serves food with attitude and distinction. There are a lot of great chefs cooking in Massachusetts so you’ll have many choices outside of Applebee’s.

If mom loves to cook and try new and different dishes and techniques, then a cookbook is a perfect gift. And while The Joy of Cooking and Betty Crocker cookbooks are excellent books, try something new and different. We recommend the new six-volume set ofTechniques of Modern Cuisine. This huge and stunning compendium captures all the techniques of modern cooking and molecular gastronomy. Mom might not have an immersion circulator lying around the kitchen, but it’ll still make for a good read.
- A Taste of Home
If mom grew up somewhere other than where she lives now, buy her a gift basket of some her childhood favorite foods. Nostalgia and delicious foods are a great gift combination. Search online for gourmet gift basket makers in the big city nearest to where she grew up. They probably make one.

Local and organic foods are the biggest trends in the culinary world right now, and there’s no better way to get local and organic than by buying shares in local Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA) farms. For a monthly charge these local growers will deliver baskets of in-season fruits and vegetables every week during growing seasons. The produce is fresh, delicious, and supports local businesses.
