5 Reasons to Use a Scraps Bowl
When you’re cooking, do you toss extra scraps in the trash or garbage disposal? Have you ever thought of what you could do with all of those scraps? In your defense, the word scraps maybe a little harsh. It’s not like its old or spoiled food; they are simply extras that you’re not using. Here are 5 reasons why a using a scraps bowl is a wonderful idea in the kitchen.
Extra Meals
Think about how many scraps you actually throw away. It’s a considerable amount and you don’t even realize it. When you’re cooking a big meal use a scraps bowl, when you’re done cooking, separate out the scraps and you will most likely have enough for another meal or two. You can freeze some of the scraps and save them for later. For example you can use the vegetable stalks for soup stocks and broths.
Scraps Save Money
By saving scraps you can actually save money. The extra food can create more than one meal and save you from a trip to the grocery store or better yet, a fast food restaurant. The prices of food often act as if they are on a rollercoaster and are constantly up and down, an extra meal or ingredients that are ready in the freezer could add up.
Helping the Earth
Rather than simply tossing extra food into the garbage, why not collect them and start a compost pile. It’s full of nutrients that are healthy for the environment and can do wonders for your garden.
Giving to Charity
Many foods that are “scraps” are just extra. If you use a scrap bowl to separate the extra food you could save it and donate it to a charity. You could give it to a local food bank as is or you could make a dish with it. Most likely you would have to save it, freeze it until you’ve collected a sizeable donation, but most food banks or charities appreciate any donation.
Saves Time
Perhaps the simplest reason and maybe overlooked reason to have a scraps bowl is that it can actually save time in the kitchen. Think about it, how often do you run from counter to trash can or sink to throw away the extra food. With a scraps bowl you can avoid the runaround and just dump everything into your bowl and then either freeze or throw away. When you’re busy, every second counts in the kitchen.
More Useful than You May Have Thought
Having a scraps bowl in the kitchen can be pretty useful for you, the environment and others that need it. A kitchen scraps bowl is a small investment that can payoff big time and is a lot more useful than you may have thought.
