6 Cheeses Everyone Should Know

Think back to the last amazing meal you had. Whether it was simply appetizers at a friend’s house or a gorgeous 5 course culinary arts creation in a fancy restaurant, there was likely one ingredient in common – cheese! There are many cheeses to choose from when cooking. In addition, certain cheeses make great appetizers and possess unique flavors that aid to a dish's taste. However, there are a few cheeses that stand out above the rest.

Here are six cheeses everyone should know about.

Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
Mozzarella is a wonderful cheese, every cook should know about. It’s most commonly either based from cow's milk or buffalo milk. Due to its mild flavor, mozzarella cheese is often used to top pizza, make Caprese salad, or stuff strombolis. Moreover, it is perfect for paninis because of its great melting ability. Mozzarella is a stringy, stretching, melting cheese. Once positioned it will remain where it is placed, making it great as a topping. If you attend a cooking class at culinary school in Florida, chances are that you will likely have a fun pizza making class that will involve mozzarella.

Greek Feta
This light salty cheese is both soft and tangy. It is great placed on pasta salads, used with mustard-based vinaigrette, or paired with fruit. Its fresh flavor makes it perfect for summer cooking. Feta cheese does not change shape or lose its flow when heated. This is thought to be caused by its high salt content.

Brie
Brie cheese is great to use as an appetizer. It is the perfect cheese to be placed on crackers or bread. It is a soft cow's milk cheese with a silky texture. A great way to serve brie cheese is baked and wrapped in a filo dough.

Goat Cheese

Goat cheese provides a perfect accent to strong green salads. It can also taste great if stuffed into chicken. Goat cheese is a tangy soft cheese that can easily be spread or crumbled. Spreading goat cheese onto crackers and topping with sun-dried tomatoes is a great way to utilize its tangy taste.

Swiss Cheese
Swiss cheese is a mild cheese with a savory taste. It has a semi-hard consistency with a mild taste. It is the perfect topper for any sandwich. Moreover, it can be a great filler for baked goods like quiche and crepes.

Parmesan Cheese
Parmesan is hard cheese made from cow's milk. It has a strong nutty flavor. Due to its strong nature, a little Parmesan cheese goes a long way. It can be sprinkled on top of pastas or added as flavoring to roasted vegetables. It can be used to top fresh tomatoes, which makes it a perfect cheese for summer cooking.

Cooking with cheese can add texture and flavor to any dish. Choosing the proper cheese to use is essential, in preparing a dish rich in flavor and is an art in itself. There are many aspects of culinary arts that are often overlooked – and understanding and being able to select a good cheese is one of them.
