5 Tools that Make Apple Preparation Easier

As fall approaches our thoughts turn to apple cider, hot apple pie and homemade applesauce. There is nothing more nostalgic than the smell of fresh apples on a cool, crisp fall day. If you enjoy baking classes and working with apples there are a few tools that you can utilize to make preparing them much easier.

Apple Peeler

An apple peeler is a useful and versatile tool that comes in a wide variety of styles. In its most basic form it is a metal blade attached to a handle made of plastic, metal or wood that is used to remove the outer peel of the apple. Mostly commonly a simple Y shaped vegetable peeler is used but there are also varieties that clamp to your work table and are capable of peeling, coring and slicing your apples with just the turn of a handle. While these can be a bit of an investment, if you frequently bake or want to enroll in a culinary school in Atlanta it is worth the money.

Apple Corer

Apple corers are a great cooking tool to have if you are making a recipe that requires many apples such as pie or apple sauce or are taking baking classes. It also makes preparing perfect apple rings quick and easy. The most common type of apple corer consists or a round cutting device attached to a wooden or plastic handle that when pushed through an apple removes a circular section of the apple including the core and pits while leaving the rest of the apple intact.

Apple Wedger

An apple wedger both cores an apple and slices it into wedges simultaneously, which makes it a great time saving device. Your basic apple wedger is cylindrical in shape and is designed to be pushed down onto an apple. At its center is a round cutting tool that removes the core while blades that radiate out from the center cut the apple into segments or wedges. An Apple wedger is a great tool to invest in if you plan to go to a culinary school in Atlanta.

Food Mill

If you plan on making a lot of homemade applesauce you may want to invest in a food mill. A food mill is designed to puree or mash food and it will give your applesauce a nice smooth texture. A food mill consists of three main parts; a handle attached to a bent blade, a large bowl and a bottom plate that resembles a sieve. When you turn the handle your apples are pushed by the blade through the sieve and into the bowl.

A Sharp Paring Knife

This kitchen basic is essential when preparing apples. Pairing knives are usually between 2 ½ and 4 inches in length with a plane edged blade. They are perfect for all small jobs and intricate work. They can be used to remove the peel or cut out any small brown spots. They also come in handy for slicing apples or making garnishes.
