Witches Brew and Graveyard Cups: Halloween Treats

Halloween is the time for ghouls, ghosts, and graves, but it’s also the time for great parties. If you’re planning on some scary good times this year, then you’ll need some devilish treats to serve to your victims, um… guests.  We found a couple of gruesome gastronomic treats that’ll be sure to scare the fun into anyone who dares try them. Don’t worry you don’t need to be a master chef or pastry school graduate to dig up these devilish treats.

Witches Brew

When cooking in Massachusetts for your Salem witch party, you’ll need something to animate the dead. Making punch is a great way to serve refreshments and to start conversation at any party. This Halloween version will have your guests screaming for more

Ingredients:

  • 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped peeled ginger
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 (25 1/4-ounce) bottle sparkling cider (about 3 1/4 cups), chilled
  • 4 cups cranberry juice cocktail, chilled
  • 1 (1-liter) bottle club soda or seltzer, chilled
  • 1 cup dark rum (optional – 21+ please)
  • Ice blocks in any shape

Preparation:
Bring cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, water, and sugar to a boil in a small heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar has dissolved, then simmer, covered, 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep, uncovered, 1 hour.

Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, discarding solids then chill until cold.

Combine all remaining ingredients, except ice, with syrup in a punch bowl. Add ice before serving.

Graveyard Cups

These ghoulish treats are great for monsters both young and old. Don’t worry about pastry school for these undead confections, just follow the directions for frightful fun.

Ingredients:

  • 24 clear 12-oz. plastic cups
  • 2 packages of Oreo cookies
  • 2 3.25 oz. packages of instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 12 oz. container of whipped cream
  • 24 Pepperidge Farms Milano Cookies
  • Brown or black cake decorating gel
  • 24 gummi worms

Instructions:
Crush all Oreos in food processor. In the bottom of each cup, place about 1 Tbsp. of Oreos. Mix remainder of Oreos in pudding mixture, holding out about 2 cups for topping.

Then spoon about 2 TBSP Oreo mixture over pudding. Poke one gummi worm down in dirt, still showing on top. On each Milano cookie, write on top half "RIP" with cake decorating gel, and stick them down in the back of the cup. They resemble tombstones.

Note: You can also do this in a sheet cake pan with lots of tombstones and worms for a home party.
