How to Prepare and Grill Kabobs
When it comes to grilling, kabobs are king. Not only do they taste great but they look great too. There are no set rules for what to add to your skewer so get your favorite veggies and meats ready and get cooking! Here is a simple six step outline for crafting delectable kabobs.
1. Soak skewers – While there are many different options out there, you may want to go with flat wooden skewers since they won’t get too hot like the metal ones and your meal won’t come sliding off the stick like it will on rounded wooden sticks. Fill a large bowl with water and soak the skewers for at least a half hour, this way they will not catch fire when you set them on the grill.
2. Prepare veggies – While the skewers are soaking, slice the veggies into relatively thin bite-sized pieces. Remember that not all vegetables cook at the same time so try and put veggies with similar cooking times together on their own skewers. Squash and heartier vegetables, like potatoes for example, will need to cook slightly longer.
3. Prepare meat – Next, slice up the meat keeping the pieces thin enough so that they will cook all the way through. Since it is not the best idea to have raw meat touching anything you will later consume, you may want to put only meat together and only vegetables together or you can cook it slightly on the grill or on the stove before adding it to the kabob. This will also help to synchronize the cooking time. Make sure to leave a little space between each piece so that it will all cook evenly.
4. Add marinade or sauce – Whether you feel like making a marinade or simply using bottled salad dressing, this will add extra flavor to the meal. If you marinade the raw meat, be sure to use fresh marinade on the vegetables to avoid coming in contact with the bacteria from the uncooked meat.
5. Get grilling – The main thing you want to avoid is cooking the kabobs at too hot of a temperature. Medium heat is usually adequate and will give all the ingredients time to cook to perfection. Cooking time will depend on what meats you choose but typically will be between 10 – 15 minutes. Since each piece is bite-sized they are perfect for sampling.
6. Serve and enjoy – Serve as a total meal or with a salad or fresh corn on the cob and enjoy!
