How to Prepare Homemade Hummus

Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dish that consists of chickpeas or garbanzo beans crushed into a tasty mash. The food is often used as a dip for pita bread, chips, or even vegetables. Popular in the health-food world and in many a cooking class, hummus is known to be extremely high in nutritional value. It contains large amounts of complex carbohydrates and protein that can fuel the working man or woman for long durations. Frankly, hummus is a delicious food that really has no downsides. If you are a believer in hummus and love it as much as the next person, you should learn how to make it from scratch since homemade is almost always better and cheaper than store-bought versions. Here's how to prepare your very own hummus from start to finish.

Ingredients
Before you can make this dish, you will need to gather the necessary ingredients from your local grocery store. One batch of simple hummus requires the following ingredients:

  • 16 oz of chickpeas or garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 cup of chickpea liquid from the can
  • several tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons of tahini
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Once you have the above ingredients in these rough proportions, you will be able to begin making your hummus.

Prepping the Hummus

First, you will need to filter the liquid out of the can of chickpeas. Catch the liquid in a container for later use. Next, throw all of your ingredients excluding the chickpea liquid into a food processor and begin to mix on the lowest setting. After a minute or so, pour the chickpea liquid into the mix and continue to process for another 3-4 minutes. Pay attention to the consistency because you don't want to over or under-process the mash. The consistency should be fairly smooth and homogenous. Once it has reached a nice and creamy state, transfer the mash into a serving bowl. Make a crater in the center of the bowl and add several tablespoons of olive oil. If you'd like, you can garnish the plate with any type of herbs available. Finally, serve with toasted pita bread or veggies and enjoy! This is one of the staple recipes often taught in amateur culinary enthusiast cooking class since it is easy to make and is the perfect food to put out when entertaining.

Different Styles of Hummus
While the recipe above shows you the basics of making a hummus, you can modify the recipe however you want to suit your tastes.  You can do this by experimenting, looking up different recipes or even by taking a Mediterranean cooking class. Many people love spicy food, so adding a couple pinches of cayenne pepper or thinly-sliced hot peppers will surely kick your hummus up a notch. Paprika also adds tons of extra flavor and a slightly spicy taste.

In the Middle East, hummus is often paired with ground fava beans in what is known as hummus-ful. The two ingredients are said to perfectly complement each other in both looks and taste. Fava beans are especially popular in Northern Africa where it may be part of a daily diet. Like regular hummus, hummus-ful is a versatile dish that is extremely cheap and beneficial to health. Here's how to prep the fava beans for a hummus-ful. In the U.S., most areas embrace hummus and in the Minneapolis culinary arts scene, you will find tasty Mediterranean food everywhere!

First, you will need 1 cup of dried fava beans, 1 clove of garlic, 1/2 tomato, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1/2 a lemon, and pinch of salt and pepper. The fava beans will need to soak in water overnight so they can clean and moisten. You should then drain the water and let the beans sit submerged for a few more hours. Then, toss them into a pot small pot and cook over low heat for 60 to 90 minutes. The water should evaporate, and the beans will become very soft. You can now dice the rest of the ingredients, add the seasoning, and stir everything together. Serve alongside hummus for a dynamic-duo that puts the punch to poor eating.
