California School of Culinary Arts Students Create Gingerbread Houses for Project Angel Food Fundraiser

Viewing and Auction of Students’ Gingerbread Houses to Benefit Residents Affected by Chronic Illnesses

PASADENA, Calif., December 11, 2008 California School of Culinary Arts (CSCA) students will construct gingerbread houses for Gingerbread Village, a display that will be part of Project Angel Food Lane, a fundraiser to benefit Project Angel Food. The Gingerbread Village will be on view at the Pasadena Senior Center on December 13, 3 to 8 p.m., and December 14, 2 to 8 p.m.

The gingerbread houses will be constructed by the students using edible gingerbread walls along with candies and other decorations. The students will use ingredients donated by CSCA to make gingerbread from scratch. Students will design their own unique gingerbread houses, some as large as three-by-three feet, which take several days to construct. Some of the houses will be entirely edible while others may be fortified or adorned with non-edible items.

Gingerbread creations on display will include a replica of Project Angel Food's headquarters building, a Mario Castle and mini village.

The gingerbread houses will be judged by viewers and guest judge Sue Campoy of Julienne Restaurant for various awards, including a coveted “Viewer's Choice” award. Many of the houses will be up for silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting Project Angel Food.

“Project Angel Food gives our students the opportunity to showcase their talent while making a difference in the local community,” said chef instructor Geraldine Reyes, who is overseeing the students work on the gingerbread houses.

Project Angel Food cooks and delivers meals to local residents battling HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The proceeds from the Gingerbread Village viewing will go toward providing those meals during the holiday season. Admission is $5 per adult and $3 per child.
