Cheeses That Are Great For Grating

With Mother's Day just around the corner, many of us are looking for a new dish to impress Mom. Grated cheese is an excellent way to not only add flavor to a dish, but to also supplement color and plating. Try this list of cheeses that are excellent for grating and can be used to make that special dish just perfect.

When most think of cheddar cheese, we see it as a cheese that seems simplistic, no real flair in the culinary arts world. Something you put on tacos or use for macaroni and cheese, but cheddar can liven up a lot of dishes and add some color as well. Try grating it in long strands so that you can use it more easily on mashed potatoes and other potatoes dishes. It's sharp distinctive flavor and bright color adds everything to basic down home dishes. In fact, even in the sophisticated Seattle culinary arts scene, you will see cheddar on many a dish!

Queso Fresco
If you want to add a creamier feel to any dish, try the Mexican cheese queso fresco. This cheese goes great with spicy pasta dishes or grated on top of roasted chicken breast. It’s a white cheese similar to mozzarella but has a more distinctive taste. Adding this to spicy dishes will compliment them well without drowning out the heat you are looking for creating the ultimate culinary arts delicacy.

The most famous grated cheese has to be Parmigiano-Reggiano. This Italian cheese is usually served on top of pastas and Italian dishes but it can add a unique texture to almost any dish. Try mixing this with a garlic sauce and adding it to salad. This is often done in England but isn't seen much in the States. This will make a great dressing that can taste better than typical Italian dressings.

Blue Cheese
The strong taste of blue cheese has been popular for years in salad dressings but there is a more unique use for this if you want to make that ordinary burger into a gourmet master piece. First, start by adding some Dijon mustard to your ground beef and make your patties. Pull some of the meat away from the middle and insert some bleu cheese. This will give your burgers a great rich flavor impressing any guest you have.

No matter where your culinary palate might sit, grated cheese can be used to broaden your culinary arts horizons. Feel free to experiment with different types of cheeses and what comes out may surprise you. Find inspiration in the wonderful Seattle culinary options that surround you.
